WOMAN WARRIOR WEDNESDAY : FUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI

  • First African woman to drive a car.

  • She was the mother of Professor Olikoye Ransome- Kuti, Beko Ransome- Kuti, and Fela Anikulapo- Kuti.

  • Known as the ‘‘Lioness of Lisabi’’ who led the Abeokuta women’s revolt against arbitrary taxation, which led to the abduction of the Alake of Egba in 1946.

  • She championed women’s rights to vote, was a member of the house of chiefs, and one of the delegate that negotiated Nigerian’s independence from Great Britain in 1960.

  • She died from injuries sustained after being thrown out of the window by Nigerian military personnel in 1978.
